The known superconducting copper oxides may be described as intergrowth structures consisting of conducting CuCo2 planes separated by insulating block layers , the stoichiometry of which may be adjusted to provide a means of doping the CuO2 planes. We propose to prepare a completely new series of layered copper oxides, introducing a new block layer based on bismuth oxychloride units. By this means we may dope the CuCo2 planes by adjusting the anion in addition to the cation stoichiometry and study the structural and electronic effects ensuing. The aim is to produce materials contains CuO2 planes with apical O, apical halogen or no apical atoms, and to study the effects of n- and p-type doping on the electronic properties. The project will involve solid state synthesis, structural characterisation and measurement of physical properties, and their correlation.
