The object of this work is to develop a living polymerisation system for vinyl monomers based on free radical propagation. This will allow the use of a wider variety of monomers than currently used anionic based systems. Block copolymers of vinyl acetate and styrene with methacrylates and acrylates are a major goal. We seek to fully understand the chemistry so as to enable us to fully exploit the chemistry. Initially we will focus on the use of bidentate diamides and phosphines with aluminium alkyls in conjunction with stable free radicals. After establishing the chemistry with stable nitroso ligands eg TEMPO we will move to the more versatile phenoxide ligands. Organometallics will be studied by high field NMR, XRD and ESR whilst all polymers will be fully characterised by GPC and NMR. Polymers of particular interest will be examined by matrix assisted laser desorption mass spectroscopy.
