Summary on Grant Application Form |
The present proposal for injecting semi solid slugs of copper alloy into a die will involve the flow of slurry under pressure into slots within a die, which simulate the cage of the electric motor rotor, until the die is filled or else freezing of the slurry results in incomplete filling. The flow rate of the slurry is controlled by the thixoforming press and the effect of this and the die temperature on the filling of slots of various lengths and thicknesses is to be investigated for a range of high conductivity copper alloys. Using different models of heat extraction and solidification it is intended to relate the penetration of slurry into the die to die geometry and material properties.
