Summary on Grant Application Form |
We will synthesise the following three polypyrrole-silica micro-particle systems:1. Carboxylic acid-functionalised polypyrrole-silica particles.2. Amine-functionalised polypyrrole-silica particles.3. Polypyrrole-silica-magnetite particles. We will aim to control the particle size of each of the above three systems in the 100 nm to 1 mm range. Each of the above three systems will be characterised in terms of their particle size distribution, particle density, specific surface area, chemical composition and extent of surface functionalisation using a wide range of techniques including: transmission and scanning electron microscopy; photon correlation spectroscopy; disc centrifuge photosedimentometry; helium pycnometry, BET nitrogen absorption, thermogravimetric analysis; elemental microanalyses; u.v./visible absorption spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These new highly coloured, surface-functionalised particles will be evaluated for use in biomedical applications (e.g. diagnostic assays) in collaboration with our industrial partner, Polymer Laboratories.
