Summary on Grant Application Form
A computational prediction procedure is to be developed for multiply stratified flows in which density variations are due to gradients in species concentration and temperature. The evolution of the stratified body due to turbulent mixing and wall heat transfer is to be simulated with the aid of a finite volume procedure incorporating a grid-adaption procedure which refines the grids in regions of high density gradients. The focus of the research is turbulence modelling, in particular the ability of variants of Reynoldsstress/flux closure to simulate the mixing processes and the rapid destruction (merging) of stratified cells when density stratification vanishes locally due to combined action of heat and mass transfer. Following validation, the method is to be applied to the hazardous process of roll-over in stratified LNG tanks, at which large quantities of gas can evaporate due to the sudden release of heat associated with merging cells.
