The requirements of better fuel economy and strict emissions standards will make new approaches necessary in turbocharging automotive diesel engines. This project addresses the turbine technology for such applications and seeks to (a) explore the scope available to modify the turbine operating characteristics in order to better match the engines and (b) to understand the transfer of energy from the pulsating exhaust gas to the turbine and from these make best use of that energy. It is proposed to design and test suitable rotor geometries under both steady and pulsating flows, using high-response instrumentation to measure the time-varying performance and flow field. It is also intended to develop computational models of pulse flow in a turbine for use in enhanced engine-turbocharger matching simulations.
