Summary on Grant Application Form
The research aims to study the effect of climate change on the spatial-temporal distributions of precipitation through the construction of suitable stochastic models. In one part of the research, standard methods of time series and spatial data analysis, such as the variogram, will be applied to daily rainguage data, with the intention of investigating how their parameters change as a function of major indicators of climate, such as averages of temperature and precipitation over large spatial and temporal regions. These major indicators may be related directly to the greenhouse effect through the output of general circulation models.A second part of the research will use physically-motivated models for the formation and dispersion of precipitation events or storms. A Monte Carlo method will be developed to compute Bayes estimates of parameters in such models when applied to daily rainguage data. The objective is again to relate the parameters of these models to major indicators of climate, and hence to predict future patterns of precipitation taking account of the greenhouse effect.A third part of the research will extend the methods of the second part to mountainous regions by introducing topographic features to the model.
