Summary on Grant Application Form
A polymer composite system is to be investigated with a view to strengthening and stiffening degraded or underdesigned reinforced or prestressed concrete beams or upgrading the load carrying capacity to existing structures; the system must be corrosion free. Oxford Brookes University will provide the jointing technology. Polymer composites, particularly epoxy resins, combined with carbon fibre, or a hybrid of glass and carbon fibre, have excellent corrosion resistance, high specific stiffness and low maintenance costs; these properties, compared with those of steel, must result in short and long term financial savings. An investigation into, and a characterisation of, the physical and mechanical properties of the polymer composite will be made and bonding and testing of unstressed and prestressed composite plates to degraded beams will be undertaken. Numerical and experimental analyses will be performed on small and medium scale composite structural systems incorporating the manufactured composite plates. The technology transfer of the scientific knowledge to industry and liaison with the industrial partners will be made at all stages of the investigation. The final task is to provide input to a draft Code of Practice.
