Summary on Grant Application Form
The use of composite insulating materials in novel applications requires the accumulation of data in three main areas, tracking, water absorption and the resulting changes in mechanical properties. The influence on surface tracking of the inclusion in resin materials of silicone oil, aluminium oxide and zinc oxide will be investigated. Measurements will be made of the ingress of water into samples of glass fibre reinforced polyester resin under the influence of high electric fields. Tensile test will be performed to gauge the effect of absorbed water on the strength of the bond between the resin and glass fibres.
