Summary on Grant Application Form
The research programme will build on the existing photonuclear programme at Mainz University, and the radioactive programme at Louvain la Neuve. Both programmes will exploit the detector and instrumentation developments at Edinburgh. The Mainz programme will be specifically aimed at investigations of the photonuclear reaction mechanisms in light nuclei by study of such reactions as ( ,+N), ( ,NN), ( ,+2N) etc. Such investigations will lead to a more detailed understanding of the nucleon-nucleon interaction (including meson exchange effects and baryonic excitation behaviour in light nuclei), which in turn will lead to a deeper understanding of nuclear matter in general. The radioactive beam programme at Louvain la Neuve and Oak Ridge will concentrate on the nuclear physics that can be uniquely addressed by radioactive beams, such as the study of reaction mechanisms where the isotopic spin variable is specifically exploited, and measurement of radioactive capture cross sections for those reactions which are of vital importance in the development of steller and cosmological models and the production of exotic nuclei.
