Summary on Grant Application Form |
This is a collaborative project between the Universities of Central Lancashire and Keele. It combines experimental preparation, magnetic characterisation and noise measurements on barium ferrite media with computational modelling of the micromagnetic properties of such media and brings together the experimental and theoretical expertise of the two groups. The project will use milling techniques to produce a range of Ba-fe media with different particle size, orientation and volume fraction and produce samples of media which can be investigated for noise using narrow gap contact read heads. The noise characteristics will be related to the microstructure.Parallel to the experimental work, a theoretical study of microstructure based on computational micro- magnetic simulations will calculate the noise power flux spectra to support the experimental measurements. The effects of stacking will be considered and used to predict the ultimate high density recording properties of Ba-fe.
