Summary on Grant Application Form |
The differential calorimetry work done at the IRC in superconductivity at Cambridge supplies unique information on the electronic specific heat from 1.8K to 300K. Work at Sussex has concentrated on specific heat measurements at very low temperatures, where the electronic specific heat is dominant. The primary objective of this proposal is to combine measurements from these two regions and produce a consistent picture by sharing the same well characterised samples in experiments performed at Cambridge and Sussex, thus minimising uncertainties arising from compositional and metallurgical variation. This programme of work should help to resolve the controversy between s-wave and d-wave pairing [characteristic of competing theories of high Tc superconductivity], and will shed light on the rules of pair-breaking, localisation and pseudo-gap formation in explaining the decrease of Tc from its optimum value, with under or over-doping. All of these effects have implications for the low lying excitations which can be tested with our ultra-low temperature specific heat measurements.
