Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is for research into the development of new techniques for the short term prediction of bus journey times for the applications of passenger information systems and bus priority at traffic signals. It will focus particularly on the needs of journey time prediction for use with radio based AVL based detection systems, which are emerging as a preferred technology. Bus journey time and associated traffic and signal control data will be collected in London and Southampton, using largely automated techniques. Journey time prediction methods will then be developed, based on statistical analysis of this database, to incorporate the quantification of uncertainty and the effects of factors such as detection location, bus stops, intermediate signals and prevailing traffic conditions. Results will be used to assess the requirements and effectiveness of AVL based detection systems relative to loop detectors, using analytical and simulation techniques. Finally, guidance and recommendations will be produced for future system developments, particularly concerning the integration of the various technologies and systems.
