Summary on Grant Application Form
A recently funded SERC LINK project will develop a prototype monitoring system for climatic conditions, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and sulphur dioxide. The unique feature of this monitoring system will be its design to integrate with the existing communications infrastructure for traffic control and monitoring. This work is in collaboration with Siemens Plessy Controls Limited and Nottinghamshire County Council, and by late 1994 a prototype system will be installed in Nottingham. The aim of this proposed work is to install an additional 3 systems, and to carry out systematic monitoring of air pollution levels in Nottingham. The significance of the contribution made by demand-responsive signal control in reducing the level of air pollution due to traffic will be studied.
