Granular cargoes, such as mineral ores, cement powder and grain are liable to shift. Currently about one ship carrying iron concentrate or iron ore is lost at sea world-wide per month. Whilst come of these incidents may be due to other causes many are belevied to be due to shift of the cargo. The research will contimue previous work by the applicants into the instability of granualr cargoes in ships. It will consist of centrifuge model tests, laboratory tests and theoretical anayses and it will concentrate on mineral ores and concentrates. The particular features to be investigated are: drainage of saturated cargoes first to determine development of negative pore pressures within the cargo (which temporarily stabilise cargoes) and second to evaulate the efficiency of current stowarge practice and bilge design: studies of the drainage and strength of partly saturated granular materials during static and cyclic rolling. The products of the research will lead to establishing better procedures for stowage of moneral ores and other potentially dangerous cargoes in ships.
