Summary on Grant Application Form |
To investigate cultures in the UK construction industry by examining projects executed under the NEC. Consideration of facets of cultures, their commonality amongst participants, modifications over the course of projects and consequences for project performance are central to the research. An important factor is communication between project participants and how cultural factors impact upon effectiveness of communications due to 'indexicality'. The research will extend understanding of projects as 'adaptive systems' applied to formal systems (Higgin et al, 1966). Approximately 12 projects will be studied of which around 3 will be researched intensively through 'shadowing' participants. Hofstede's four-factor approach and questionnaires (what adaptations) will be employed. Better understanding of culture and how it impacts on project participants and performance will yield benefits in achieving better project start ups and, through improving understanding and communication, reduced incidence of disputes and enhanced performance.
