Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main areas of research in this project which are to be investigated by the University of Lancaster are:(i) the synthesis of non-binary trellis-coded modulation schemes over rings using block and convolutional codes(ii) the code-assisted symbol and frame synchronisation(CAFSS) technique to provide additional synchronisation robustness in a new combined block and symbol synchronisation scheme.Progress:To dateTrellis decoding algorithms for array codes and generalised array codes (GAC) over rings of integers modulo M, ZM, were investigated. M-ary phase modulation was combined with these codes over ZM in order to optimise performance. In this project, array codes over Z4 were found to yield a 1dB coding gain and a twofold increase in throughput efficiency over array codes over the Galois field, GF(2) for the same code rate and array size. In addition, GAC codes over Z4 were found to provide coding gain of up to 3dB and twice much throughput efficiency than that obtained with similar GAC codes over GF(2). Research work on the optimisation of these codes over Z4 and Z8 is still being carried out. In particular, a number of combinations of the information symbols to compute the check parity symbols in these codes were considered. It was found that non-linear array codes over Z4 can be obtained with this method when non-linear combinations are carried out. A computer program which models these codes for a wide range of parameters (array size, code rate, symbol deletion, etc.) was developed. This program can provide the trellis diagram, the weight structure, the asymptotically gain over uncoded M-ary modulation, and the throughput efficiency for any array codes or GAC codes. It is a useful tool which is used to further optimise performance. The next stage in this research work will involve maximum-likelihood of array and GAC codes over rings of integers modulo M. This will be followed by the study and DSP implementation of code-assisted symbol and frame synchronisation (CAFSS), which is an extension of the code-assisted bit synchronisation principle to the non-binary environment.
