Summary on Grant Application Form
A variety of methods exist for the introduction of molecular sieving characteristics into microporous carbons. Initially, microporous carbons with a suitable pore size distribution will be synthesised from a range of carbonaceous materials eg coal, coconut shell, polymers etc. These microporous substrates will be subjected to various pore blocking treatments for the introduction of kinetic selectivity. These methods of synthesis result in heterogeneous materials. The adsorption kinetics of the materials will be characterised for probe molecules of varying size and shape. This will allow the kinetic selectivity to be characterised in terms of size and geometry as a function of treatment method and conditions. From these data models for the nature of the selective material will be developed for assessing optimum separation capabilities.
