Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the project is to research and develop the potential for finite element systems to handle the mechanics of rigid and flexible mechanical systems. Emphasis will be placed on the development of effective techniques (including co-rotational joint elements) to handle the non-linear constraints associated with the various types of joints (universal joints, prismatic joints, spherical joints, floating base joints, slider joints, etc.). These constraints are of a follower nature . Among the specific techniques that will be investigated are (1) A non-linear master/slave procedure linked to large rotations (2) An augmental-Lagrangian procedure combining penalty and Lagrangian multiplier methods (with the latter being treated at the element level) (3) A mid-point Lagrangian multiplier technique. In addition to the work on joints, methods will be developed (using a similar approach to (2) (above) for effectively rigid members. All of the work will be conducted in a non-line dynamics environment.
