The applicants have developed interim design methods for a particular type of cold-formed section used in a proprietary space frame system. Our work has highlighted several inadequacies with current design codes, in some cases resulting in significant degrees of non-conservatism. The aim of this proposal is to develop and validate our methods for a wider range of cold-formed sections, for general application, with a view to improving and extending the scope of design codes.Cold formed sections are prone to several types of buckling. Our work to date has concentrated on individual buckling modes, in particular lip buckling, torsional flexural buckling and lateral torsional buckling. Depending on the member dimensions and loading conditions, these modes may interact, and the criteria for interaction, and the strength reductions which result from interaction, need to be established and incorporated in design codes. This is the principal objective of the research.The research will involve elasto-plastic finite element studies, theoretical analysis, experimental verification, and the formulation of design models. Cost-effectiveness will be increased by the provision of a dedicated work station.An alternative numerical method is being developed at Salford University and we will be exchanging results with that group.
