In a previous research grant (GR/F 06357), the factors affecting the nucleation of silicon nitride whiskers on chosen substrates were established. It has subsequently been shown that under certain conditions these whiskers grow to long fibres. It is proposed to investigate the process, establish the conditions of nucleation and growth, and to determine the growth mechanism. The importance of the gas potentials will be established and the interaction of thermodynamic and kinetic factors studied. A limited amount of work will be carried out, on the basis of the information obtained in these tests, to determine the parameters of importance in scaling up to pilot-plant production of fibres.
