The programme will consist of experiments on Z-pinches driven by the new MAGPIE generator, capable of producing up to 2MA at 2.4MV in a 200ns pulse, together with smaller scale experiments at lower current and 1-D and 2-D simulations for comparison. (2-D MHD code development and stability theory are the subjects of two other applications.) The most important objectives will be to achieve radiative collapse in hydrogen to ultra high density (104 x solid) at currents significantly above the Pease-Braginskii current, and to study thermonuclear breakeven conditions (at 0.1 x solid) using deuterium. The coupling of electromagnetic energy to the Z-pinch, and the formation of a stable dense plasma column are important preliminary research areas, particularly as narrow (10micron) frozen hydrogen fibres alone represent a highly inductive load, prone to Rayleigh-Taylor instabilities. Various stabilising techniques will be investigated including composite or multilayer pinches, sheared axial flow, large ion Larmor radius effects and axial magnetic fields. High spatial and temporal resolution disanostics will be developed, extending present techniques particularly in laser probing of the corona, and an x-ray back-lighter. 1-D and 2-D simulations will include atomic and radiation physics and anomalous transport. New partially ionised coefficients in a magnetic field will be developed.
