The proposed investigation seeks to exploit the particular advantages that can be gained through the use of infrared active, and environment sensitive, organometallic complexes containing metal carbonyl groups as chemical sensors. The specific objectives are (i) the preparation of IR-active sensors containing selective sensing and reporting groups and (ii) the application of these to the measurement of organic analytes in biological and environmental matrices. Two sensing systems will be studied in detail. The first is concerned with inclusion complexes of iron and chromium carbonyl benzo- and dibenzo-crown ethers with ammonium ions. The second group consists of metal carbonyl labelled analogues of synthetic receptors. The infrared spectral characteristics of these model sensors will be determined in order to define their suitability as probe molecules and promising candidate molecules will be evaluated for use in complex matrices.
