Summary on Grant Application Form
The methods in current use for the planning and design of air freight terminals are inaccurate, simplistic and inadequate. Consequently, there is no generally agreed design philosophy or methodology which has widely accepted support or usage in the air transport philosophy. In this programme of research it is proposed to develop a generalised methodology for the planning and design of air freight terminals which reflects the influences of design variables such as freight type, peaking characteristics, inbound and outbound dwell times, freight handling procedures, customs procedures and storage densities. The method will be based on in-situ and document surveys, computer simulation and the development of design charts.
