Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective of this research is to improve understanding of chalk tunnelling conditions to assist tunnel design and construction. A variety of tunnels - completed, under construction and proposed - in a range of geological settings will be used. Parallel programme of back analysis of the geology and the redistribution of stresses produced by tunnelling will be carried out by one RA and a SRF. Lessons learnt will be applied to proposed tunnels, and methods of improving in situ and laboratory measurements explored. Finite element and Discrete Element methods will be compared to see which method is the more sensitive to chalk ground conditions. To ensure that each aspect of the research is interlinked a series of training seminars will be organised. Although chalk has many unique features the results should be applicable to other weak rocks.
