Summary on Grant Application Form |
An alternative to expensive curved glued laminated timber members in the construction of portal frame type buildings is the use of much cheaper straight members connected by moment transmitting joints. In practice however, this alternative is not often exercised due to poor understanding and a lack of design guidance. The proposed programme of research will examine the behaviour of such joints made with laterally loaded resin injected dowels as the fasteners, acting in conjunction with local reinforcement of the glulam in the area of the joints. The reinforcement will consist of glued on side plates whose function is both to control splitting of the glulam parallel to the grain, thereby introducing ductility, and to provide fire protection to the metal dowels. The research will involve FEM modelling of the behaviour of the dowels in the reinforced glulam in order to determine optimum thickness for the reinforcing plates. Full size portal frame knee joints, constructed with reinforcing plates of optimum thickness, will be tested and both their strength and stiffness compared with predictions from a computer program which will use known material properties and fastener behaviour as input. The expected outcome of the research will be comprehensive guidance on the design and fabrication of site made joints which behave in a stiff, strong and predictable way and ultimately fail in a ductile manner.
