Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Adaptive Model of Thermal Comfort has been recognised as the best avenue for developing energy-conscious indoor temperature standards for buildings, particularly those without mechanical heating or cooling. The Model is based on surveys of thermal preference among populations in their normal surroundings. It has never been fully developed in a co-ordinated series of field experiments. The aim of this project is to study the methodologies, experimental and analytical, which could be used to develop and establish the Adaptive Model. Areas of investigation to be explored are:- the collection and analysis of subjective and physical data in the field;- the limitations of present methods for prediction of clothing insulation and metabolic rate when applied to conditions in the field;- the form which indoor temperature standards based on the Model might take and the research input needed to realise them.Pilot studies will be undertaken to test the methodologies recommended, and the results of the study will be collated and disseminated. Experts in the various fields covered will be consulted at all stages of the work.
