Summary on Grant Application Form |
A major obstacle to the integration of building analysis tools with design drafting packages is the problem of accommodating their specific data requirements. An analysis tool demands input parameters for particular tasks, while the possible instances of building design give rise to a boundless set of information structures. Current integration techniques, where they address this problem at all, do so by establishing a specific 'view' of a building design, which restricts the range of possible instances of buildings that can be designed on a system to those that can be built up from a fixed information set. In contrast, we propose to investigate a methodology that will take the models of current practice encapsulated within design analysis tools and use inductive analysis techniques to search for analogous information - the structure of which need not be predetermined - in representations of building designs. A prototype system, aimed at the early design stages of energy-efficient buildings, will be developed to demonstrate the applicability of these techniques. Testing and evaluation will be supported by use with architecture students.
