The first stage is further evaluation of four different commercial scale gas separation processes to compare separation by absorption, membranes, adsorption and cryogenic methods. To identify, with reasons, the most economic method of separation and to set targets for the development of new separating materials to reduce separation costs. This will be based on and supplement our extensive previous work and provide a realistic basis for developing the new technology.The second stage is to describe and explain a general method, applicable to any gas separation problem, whereby the cost of separation is separated from that of the surrounding process and which identifies the most appropriate way of defining the separation. Design and costing procedures for different separation methods will be described together with a procedure for choosing the best method and targeting new separating materials.The third stage is to develop procedures for optimising the design of separation hybrids (two methods) to identify how much separation should be done by each method.
