Summary on Grant Application Form |
Supported by new theoretical understanding of their operation, the potential of piezoelectric quartz crystal resonant oscillators coated with gel-entrapped bioreactive molecules as sensors for medical application will be explored. Polyacrylyamide, polyvinyl alcohol, hydroxy ethylmethy- lacrylate and polyethylene oxide hydrogel coatings will be used with immobilised enzymes such as oxidases, lactate dehydrogenase and hexokinase to produce sensors for blood metabolites. Sensors for monitoring drugs such as salicylate and paracetamol in blood samples employing appropriate hydrogel-entrapped antibodies will also be studied. By denaturing the hydrogels to produce ionizable side groups and by varying pH, degree of crosslinking and buffer conditions the importance of sensor molecule-gel coupling in determining response will be investigated. In all cases the responses will be related to the theoretical viscoelastic model for the behaviour of quartz crystal sensors and strategies for optimum performance will be determined. The effects of biofouling by blood components and the response of sensors containing gell-entrapped cells subjected to environmental insult will be investigated.
