Summary on Grant Application Form
This project forms part of a collaborative programme (LUCIO) based in the new Coastal Research Facility at Wallingford. An existing project (LUCI) will be extended to cover the case of tidally-varying currents superimposed on regular, irregular, and oblique incidence waves. Detailed measurements will be made of bed shear stresses using shear plates and flow velocities using the 3-D LDV system, ultrasonic velocimeters, and a new untrasonic velocity profiler. It is planned to cover the bottom of the basin with coarse aggregate and to perform repeat tests under various selected conditions with this more realistic rough boundary.Data from the tests on waves on the sloping beach will be compared with existing theories and with predictions from models developed by other LUCIO partners.UCL will also be active in the initial evaluation (with HR) of the new facility, leading to the production of a users' handbook.
