Summary on Grant Application Form |
Calibration against test data is an essential step in the preparation, introduction and acceptance of new structural codes of practice. Recent work by the applicant has demonstrated how the efforts of variability in design quantities on the reliability of the code predictions and thus the selection of appropriate safety margins may be assessed in a quantitative manner. An improved process for comparing design models with test data has also been developed. It is intended that use by made of these two advances within the context of structural steel design and the recently developed EC3 to examine these aspects of calibration in sufficient depth that improvements to both the inherent process and the actual accuracy, consistency and reliability of selected design procedures for steel components can be justified. Use will be made of manufacturers records and existing laboratory test data in a series of numerical studies, the results of which should both provide much better understanding of the subject in general and be of specific use in the further development of EC3.
