Summary on Grant Application Form |
Earth orbiting space vehicles are subject to high velocity impact from both naturally occurring meteroids and man-made debris. Concern is mounting that, as a result of the activities being performed in space, the extent of man-made debris will be such that in the future, the risk to systems will prohibit operations in some orbits. The objective of the research is to contribute to our understanding of the debris environment, specifically so that improved vehicle risk assessment may be undertaken and to provide a more rigorous analysis of the potential for debris cascade. This will improve both engineering design measures relating to debris protection and contribute to the debate over appropriate rather than restrictive legislation of debris production. The proposed modelling approach is a novel application of a technique which has characteristically been used to great effect in the simulation of rarefied gas flows. This method provides detailed statistical information concerning the evolution of a debris cloud and does not rely upon mean value analysis.
