Summary on Grant Application Form |
Current research in biomagnetism is producing a wealth of new information in several areas of intense medical interest such as fetal status, and the human brain and nervous system. Stringent requirements for magnetic shielding, bulky size and high cost of th equipment, however, severely limit the widespread clinical use of this technique. We propose to build a low-cost multi-channel SQUID biomagnet- ometer for operation in magnetically unshielded environments with a field sensitivity of 10 fT/Hz 1/2 and having a total weight of less then 5 kg. The number of measurement channels would vary between 5 and 9, according to the requirements of the application and it will be possible to dismantle and re-assemble the detectors in any desired configuration. Second and third order wire-wound axial gradiometers, as well as thick and thin-film planar gradiometers will be assessed for their performance in such a system. Advanced techniques of active noise cancellation including software-linked gradiometers and gradient noise subtraction, as well as spatial filtering procedures will be developed. The instrument will then be used for a wide range of biomagnetic measurements including fetal magnetocardiography, heart and brain function studies in neonates, and peripheral nerve and spinal cord diagnostics.
