Summary on Grant Application Form |
The Aston Group has designed and developed a unique Time of Flight Fast Atom/Ion Scattering Spectrometer (ToFFASS) with an energy resolution 0.5 eV. The instrument has the ability to produce direct or pulsed incident beams of ions or atoms and to detect scattered ions and atoms simultaneously or separately. In addition to this there is the facility to vary incidence, exit and scattering angles independently. There is no instrument available in the world with all these features. These features mean that details of scattering processes which were not previously accessible can be investigated via yields and energy differences observed in the various spectra. Further instrument development is not required at this stage. A one year validation exercise is proposed to demonstrate the unique capabilities of the instrument. This programme is designed to rigorously demonstrate the capabilities of the ToFFASS technique to determine electron exchange parameters in surface particle collisions. This will be achieved through measurements of electron exchange parameters of neutral and ion surface collisions and through the study of surfaces which have proved difficult for conventional LEISS. This latter part of the programme will concentrate on plasma etched GaAs.
