Summary on Grant Application Form
Investigation of glass ceramic formation in phosphate systems will be in two main parts emphasising fundamental aspects of crystallisation and selected property measurements. In Part 1 nucleation and crystallisation of CaO-P2O5 based glasses yielding machineable glass ceramics will be studied, to identify the roles of Al2O3, TiO2 and SiO2 additions in promoting nucleation, and to determine the effects of heat treatment and nucleant concentrations on microstructure and hence on machinability, strength and fracture toughness. Part 2 will concentrate on glass ceramic formation in the MgO-P2O5 and ZnO-P2O5 systems using additions of Al2O3, TiO2 and ZrO2 identified as nucleating agents in these systems in previous work at Sheffield. The role of these components and additions of B2O3 and hydroxyl, also potential nucleants, will be studied. Selected limited property measurements on the new glass ceramics produced in Part 2 will include strength, machinability and thermal expansion coefficient. Electrical, chemical and other properties will be determined outside the main programme, for example in student projects. New glass ceramics with potential applications, for example in the biomedical area, will be identified for further investigation.
