Summary on Grant Application Form |
In this proposal a novel coincidence technique will be applied, for the first time, to an experimental study of ion-surface interactions. The electron yield will be recorded for specific ion energy loss and charge change with singly and multiply charged ions incident on atomically flat surfaces. Compared with earlier measurements where only one of the interaction products was detected these unique differential measurements should lead to a more fundamental understanding of the interaction processes. The current controversy regarding the one or two-step nature of the two electron capture mechanism should be resolved in a study of incident H+ ions and reflected H- ions. Our ECR source will provide a wide range of incident multiply charged ions in prepared electronic states. The coincidence technique has the potential to give information on the modification of surface electronic states near surface absorbates and dopants.
