It has been known for the last decade that photoexcitation of PVK in zero field, surprisingly, leads to creation of charge pairs that avoid geminate recombination for milliseconds, remaining collectable in a later applied collection field. Generally accepted theory would suggest pair lifetimes of picoseconds - nanoseconds in zero field. The mechanism whereby geminate recombination is suppressed for such long times is currently unknown. Even more surprisingly, recent studies by the applicants have shown that in a highly perfect polymer single crystal, which is a model one dimensional material, such delayed geminate recombination exists with similar pair lifetimes. It is the purpose of this application to study the effect and explore two models. One involves the intervention of traps. A more exotic suggestion is the formation of interchain excitons and possibly a coulomb glass where a neutral and stable plasma of photocarriers is created. A pump-probe technique, the transient grating, will be used as a method of observing the photocharge, finding its lifetime and measuring its spatial diffusion both perpendicular and parallel to the chain direction. The technique will be extended to other materials in the form of LB films.
