Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of the proposed work is to measure austempering kinetics in alloyed iron and to use the data to define a stepped heat treatment that will produce a fully bainitic austempered structure and hence optimum mechanical properties. This is a scientific approach to a problem with alloyed irons which must be used with thicker castings that hitherto has not been solved but minimised by limiting the alloying additions. The stepped heat treatment will be optimised with respect to mechanical properties and secondly with respect to heat treatment time. The possibility of using a simple property measurement of an austempered specimen such as hardness for defining the stepped heat treatment will be explored.
