Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim is first to characterise as-cast defects and those produced by machining or by shot-peening in terms of dimensions, residual stress and position in microstructure. Short-crack growth studies will be made to provide a deterministic relationship between defect size/character and fatigue life and the deterministic relationships will then be fed into a probabilistic model to predict fatigue life based on the distribution of defects. The model will be validated using rig tests. Alternative algorithms will be assessed.
