Summary on Grant Application Form
It is proposed to develop a metal spray deposition process for the production of hot and cold strip mill work rolls with greatly enhanced wear and thermal fatigue performance. The project will evaluate the microstructure and wear behaviour of small coupons as a function of processing conditions, alloy chemistry and heat treatment. Similar studies will be performed on full scale work rolls sprayed from the most promising materials. A comprehensive determination of the bond characteristics will be made. The project will provide an improved understanding of the relationship between process variables and microstructure/properties; a greater understanding of the solidification mechanisms during the Osprey Process for roll alloys; a definition of the microstructure required for optimised thermal fatigue resistance and wear resistance and a basic understanding of the factors which control interface bond strength of sprayed coatings.
