Summary on Grant Application Form
A Hyper-Raleigh Scattering instrument for the measurement of the first hyperpolarisability of molecules and ions in solution will be built. A synthetic programme for novel mixed-valence compounds, with intervalence charge transfer designed to optimise the hyperpolarisability, will be conducted in parallel. Preliminary results indicate that the nonlinearity of this type of chromophore is exceptionally large. A basic understanding of the magnitude of the hyperpolarisability will be sought, with a view to optimising the performance of electro-optic switches.
