Summary on Grant Application Form
A programme of experimental and theoretical research is proposed to determine the performance and limitations of composite materials when used as a more durable alternative to steel reinforcement in structural concrete. In the laboratory, the performance will be examined of a range of composite materials having different mechanical properties and surface finishes when embedded in concrete and subjected to a variety of realistic loads. In parallel, theoretical and nonlinear (FE) models will be developed and validated against the experimental data. This will provide an understanding of the important interaction between the composite and concrete materials through the complex mechanism of surface bond, and how it affects the distribution of cracking in the concrete and hence the performance of the structural element throughout its life. Since both the concrete and composite materials are inherently brittle materials, an important consideration will be how to provide sufficient confinement to the concrete compression zone so as to ensure ductile failure.
