A successful rapid two-dimensional modellers based on the Upper Bound Elemental Technique (UBET) has already been developed at Bath and is used by sites worldwide. The new project will extend this work into three dimensions by using a newly developed Tetrahedral Element Upper Bound Analysis (TEUBA). Both UBET and TEUBA are particularly powerful tools as they provide a method for determining optimum intermediate preform shapes often necessary in forging. The two methods are approximate but provide rapid solutions and their use from design to production is complementary to more accurate simulations which can only be accomplished by the Finite Element Method. The project will therefore provide a comprehensive forging modeller with an entry level using UBET and TUEBA in addition to a higher level of accuracy with the commercial finite element code, FORGE 2 and FORGE 3.
