Summary on Grant Application Form |
A collaborative and fundamental research project between UMIST and Cranfield Institute of Technology will develop the materials understanding and coating process deposition methods necessary to devise thin-film conductance sensors for monitoring sulphur-containing species on-line in higher temperature mixed-gas systems. Emphasis will be placed on the chemical physics aspects of the surface interactions of the active film with the measured gas and ionic conduction phenomena in the layer and the physical and chemical limitations of the system. Two classes of non-stoichiometric materials, oxides and sulphides, form the basis of the research. Investigations will be made of the influence of deposition parameters on the structures and conductivities of sputter-deposited films and their ability to sense sulphur-containing gases in closely controlled mixed-gas environments at high temperature. The stabilities of successful devices over extended periods in these aggressive gases will be assessed and evaluated.
