Summary on Grant Application Form
1. To extend the theoretical model (developed for quasi static loading conditions) to impact loading conditions in sandwich panels. 2. To investigate means of preventing total penetration of missiles through sandwich panels. 3. To determine the residual strength of partly damaged panels. The behaviour of sandwich panels made of glass reinforced plastic (GRP) skins and polymeric foam cores to missile impacts (at speeds up to 200 m/s) simulating fragment impacts caused by nearby explosions will be studied, and the residual strength of partly damaged panels will also be determined experimentally. Methods of improving the resistance to total penetration will be studied and tested. The analytical models developed in the previous project to predict failure mechanisms and failure loads under slow speed loading conditions will be extended to the high velocity regime. Attempts will be made to amend panel design procedures to account for high velocity effects.
