Summary on Grant Application Form |
The main objectives of the proposed study are as follows:i) to develop a mathematical model for characterising the electrical and mechanical behaviour of ER fluids operating in the squeeze-flow mode; ii) to validate the model through the development of novel experimental techniques for identifying the squeeze-flow characteristics of ER fluids;iii) to employ the model and experimental facility to investigate the mechanical behaviour of an ER fluid under various forms of electrical excitation: constant applied potential difference constant applied electric field periodically varying potential difference periodically varying electric field with both plain and insulated electrodes;iv) to investigate the influence of simultaneously exciting an ER fluid in squeeze with periodic electrical and mechanical waveforms and thus characterise their interaction within the fluid.
