Summary on Grant Application Form |
Computations are to be made, linked with the UCL group's theoretical studies, on nonlinear studies, on nonlinear problems arising in transition to turbulence and in airfoil stall as follows:1. StallMore accurate numerical tests are intended on the steady and unsteady breakdown behaviour proposed theoretically. An adaptive gridding method is to be extended from simpler evolution systems to tackle the full unsteady interactive stage. Normal pressure gradients are also to be included as suggested by theory. 2. Nonlinear Tollmein-Schlichting contextThis is partly as in 1, but in addition enhanced KdV and vortex roll-up systems need accurate treatments, while the adaptive gridding method needs to be extended further to three spatial dimensions. 3. Euler-scale contextHere a wide range is involved, from time-marching of the 3D Euler and thin-layer Euler systems to ordinary nonlinear integro-differential equations concerning spot propagation. 4. Vortex-wave contextThis again comprises a range of problems needing accurate numerical treatment, stretching from 3D vortex equations, nonlinearity coupled with wave equations, to nonlinear integral and/or differential systems at lower amplitudes. Most of the project consists of collaborative efforts.
