Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will use comparisons of far-infrared (FIR) magneto-optics and magneto- transport measurements at milliKelvin temperatures in order to probe manifestations of electron-electron interactions in systems of reduced dimensionality. Cyclotron resonance will be used to study the two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in GaAs-(Ga,Al)As heterojunctions in the ultraquantum limit, in order to elucidate the phase diagram of the 2DEG in the (B,T) plane close to and within the Wigner solid. Mechanisms leading to the violation of Kohn's theorem will be studied. The measurements will be extended to other low-carrier-density systems such as 2D hole gases in GaAs-(Ga,Al)As heterojunctions and quantum dots containing very small numbers of electrons. Corresponding measurements for a high carrier density 2D system will be made using BEDT-TTF charge transfer salts, in which areal carrier densities two orders of magnetude larger than those in the heterostructures are available. Measurements of electron-electron interaction renormalisation of the effective mass will be used to deduce hitherto inaccessible Fermi liquid parameters. Novel cyclotron resonance geometries will be developed for this work.
