Summary on Grant Application Form
The objectives of the proposed research are (i) development of a model of two-phase turbulent combustion, based on the laminar flamelet concept, in which the turbulent reaction rate is determined from separate calculation of two-phase laminar flames with detailed chemistry; (ii) formulation of the liquid phase of two-phase combustion problems in terms of a transport equation for the probability density function (pdf) of the spray; (iii) development and application of a Monte Carlo solution method for pdf transport equations of both spray and gas motion. The central part of the proposed research are the modelling of the mean turbulent reaction rate and the formulation of a pdf transport equation description of the flow that is complete in the sense that it covers simultaneously both the gas-phase and the liquid phase.
